Aline Remael is professor at the Department of Translators and Interpreters of Artesis University College, Antwerp, where she teaches Text Analysis, Translation Theory and Audiovisual Translation.  She is a member of her department’s executive body, the Department Council. Her main research interest is in audiovisual translation (intralingual and interlingual subtitling, subtitling for the deaf and hearing impaired, and audio description). She is  involved two joint research projects (funded by the University of Antwerp and Artesis University College Antwerp), one entitled “Live subtitling with speech recognition: optimising the process”, in collaboration with the Flemish public TV channel VRT, and one entitled “The Status of the (re)translated inter-title in the restoration and presentation of silent film”.

Aline Remael has also been a partner in the European Digital Television for All-project (with the Autonomous University of Barcelona among others) and is a consultant for various local audio description (AD) projects. She is a member of EST, ESIST, the TransMedia International Research Group, the advisory board of The Translator, and the newly established FIT-AVT committee. Besides, she was the local convenor of the third TransMedia conference “Media for All : Quality Made to measure” (Antwerp, 22-24 October 2009) and she is an external examiner on the MA’s in literature and audiovisual translation of Manchester University. She is also the chief editor of her department’s journal Linguistica Antverpiensia New Series, Themes in Translation Studies. She has written extensively on AVT, has co-edited various collections of articles on the topic (e.g. Media for All. Subtitling for the Deaf, Audio Description, and Sign Language, Amsterdam/New York: Rodopi, 2007) and she is the co-author of Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling with Jorge Diaz Cintas (Manchester: St Jerome, 2007).
