  2.   Course program: information

The faculty of chemistry offers a coherent, structured and polyvalent training program, build around four domains.

  • Domain `Chemistry
In this domain the different disciplines of chemistry are taken into consideration.  Beside general chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and carbon chemistry, the industrial aimed courses such as material science and synthetic and industrial chemistry are studied.
  • Domain `Chemical engineering

The basic qualifications are acquired in the courses of maths, physics, mechanics, electricity and physical chemistry, advanced topics like transfer phenomena are introduced gradually, such as fluid mechanics, the transfer of matter (substance transfer) and warmth transfer (heat-exchangers). This knowledge is completed in the third bachelor and master courses with separation techniques (unit operations), chemical process control, chemical reactors and bioreactors, as well as simulation techniques.

  • Domain `Bio- and environmental technology
In the present social context the knowledge of only chemistry and Chemical engineering for an industrial engineer chemistry is insufficient. What we need in Europe are engineers who can relate different topics, and who can reason beyond the pure chemical discipline: what is the impact on the environment? How can we make technology sustainable? What does the market need exactly? How can we make the production process man-friendly? For these reasons the faculty industrial sciences: Chemistry of the college Antwerp offers a multidisciplinary training with attention to the life Sciences: Bio- and environment technology.
  • Domain `Research, social and business skills
An engineer must remain with both feet on the ground. What are you with knowledge if you cannot persuade people? Where do you stand if you cannot quantify and benefits and the costs of your projects? How do you work in industry, if you cannot disentangle the legislation?

Project learning has an important role in your education to become an engineer.

  3.   Revised training program

To put the student immediately in contact with the different facets of chemistry, a new approach, with a curriculum build around four domains, forms the basic structure of the training.
This renewed training program started from academic year 2007-2008 on, in the first bachelor year, and is implemented further year after year.

The four domains are:
•    Chemistry
•    Chemical engineering
•    Bio- and environmental technology
•    Research, social and business skills

From the first year on the students will work actively in multidisciplinary projects.
