History of the Music department of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp
The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, which was founded by Peter Benoit in 1898, was the first Dutch-language institute for art education. For more than a hundred years, musicians - instrumentalists, singers, composers, conductors and teachers - have been trained here. In 1993 the option Jazz and Popular Music was added to the classical courses. In 1995 the Royal Flemish Conservatoire became part of the Antwerp University College (now Artesis University College Antwerp). Courses are organized in line with the provisions of the decree of 13 July 1994 on the universities and colleges of higher education in the Flemish Community. Many laureates of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp have made an important contribution to music both in Flanders and internationally. The teaching staff includes many world famous artists and educators (20% international staff and student population).

General program

The general program is divided into two cycles: the BA (1st cycle), comprising three academic years, in which students are given extensive support; and the MA (2nd cycle), comprising two academic years, which demands more individual activities, and aims to develop students’ personalities. The courses are full-time, spread over 30 academic weeks. The number of hours of lectures varies between 8 and 20 per week, depending on the options chosen and the academic year. A command of the Dutch language is essential both for the courses and the exams.

International dimension and exceptional partners

In the conservatoire you enter into an international habitat with a large number of foreign students and teachers (20%). The cross-pollination between students dance, drama and music also ensures a unique dynamic. You come in contact with renowned artists from around the world during master classes. Thanks to internships at deFilharmonie, Vlaams Radio Koor, Collegium Vocale, Vlaamse Opera en I Solisti del Vento  (Flanders Philharmonic, Flemish Radio Choir, Collegium Vocale, Flemish Opera, and I Solisti del Vento) you are already included in a broad international network. The conservatoire also organizes collaborative projects with professional ensembles such as Champ d'Action, Hermes Ensemble, Anima Eterna and Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

Study load

An artistic education assumes all-out commitment from the student. Besides a obligated basic program you can outline your profile by following elective courses and joining projects. There is a system of annual and half-yearly exams, (partial) tests and possibility to enroll for degree-, credit- or examination contract. The study load per academic year amounts to 60 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System), or the equivalent of a minimum of 1500 and maximum 1800 hours of educational and other study-related activities, including the necessary time for individual assimilation of the subject matter. The system of ECTS credits enables transfer to and from other European universities or colleges of higher education.

Performance practice

Within the conservatoire, there are three working groups active that focus on a specific repertoire from music history and its performance practice. The three working groups have the common mission to promote the concrete development of the nexus between research and performance practice - either by teachers or by students, working together or not. As the person responsible for Music Practice, Frank Agsteribbe coordinates these working groups. Specialists from the field are regularly invited for master classes on performance practice in the context of Music Practice.

The WOM (Work Group Early Music) organises artistic projects, master classes and collaborations, and initiates and coordinates a number of research projects relating to early music. As of 11-12 the conservatoire will have a permanent baroque activity with the Baroque Ensemble conducted by Ewald Demeyere. By means of particular collaborations and workshops it will shed light on various aspects of the theory and performance practice of early music. Early Music refers to the period of music history from the late Middle Ages to the late baroque, but the specific performance practice of, for example, the classical composers and early romantics (Mozart, Schubert) are spotlighted here.

There is a special focus on contemporary music, too, in WHAM (Working Group on Contemporary Music), under the leadership of Luc Van Hove and Wim Henderickx. Ensemble XXI performs works originating from the composition class. In addition, students study a selection of interesting topical compositions in terms of performance practice and specific style. Finally, in Ensemble XXI a number of smaller chamber music formations develop around particular themes or a particular composer, touching on contemporary music. Ensemble XXI is part of the Music Practice course unit. Composer days and master classes are also organised round contemporary and topical music.

The working group on Romantic Music is called The Missing Link. It deals, like WOM and WHAM, with nineteenth-century music and orchestral music.
The chairperson is Joris Verdin.

The common mission of the three working groups is to act upon the interrelationship between research and performance practice.

During the weekly individual instrument class with the teacher (s) instrument or voice work on a stylistically varied repertoire.

Since ensemble playing is recognized as integrating important musical and social skills, there is a Chamber Music course component from the first year of the BA onwards. At the start of the year students put together a suitable program in consultation with their chamber music partners and instrument teachers.

In the course unit 'Musical practice' you explore  the repertoire and performance practice of "ensemble / chorus" in the broad sense. After five levels 'Musical practice' you have the necessary tools, knowledge and experience to function as a professional musician orchestras, ensembles or choirs (for vocal department).

During master classes, lecture-recitals, field trips or projects you apply what have learned.

Projects
The artistic-pedagogical planning provides for a number of projects every year. Participating students get the opportunity to concentrate fully on how they function in a symphony orchestra, string orchestra, brass band, choir, etc. The ensembles are regularly conducted by renowned guest professors during these periods. Language course

More information on courses next year will follow soon.

Formalities

Important note: Do not come to Belgium on a tourist visa to take your entrance exam. You will then have to return to your country of origin to apply for a student visa. During the application period for the student visa – a process which may take more than three months - you cannot stay in Belgium, but must remain in your own country. This means that you would miss a large part of the academic year.

Students who plan to live in Antwerp: contact Birgit Soil for your registration in the city.

Student who are planning to live elsewere, should follow this procedure:
All foreign students (including students from the European Community) must register at the registrar's office of the town or borough in which they reside within 8 working days of arrival.
In Belgium health insurance is mandatory. This poses no problem if the home country has a health insurance agreement with Belgium. In this case, an E111 or E128 form brought from the home country suffices and no additional contribution needs to be paid. We recommend that you contact a local mutual-insurance company upon arrival in Belgium.
Students from countries without a health insurance agreement with Belgium can take a private insurance in their own country or can join a Belgian mutual-insurance company, cost approximately € 50 per quarter.
