RING
THE ANTWERP RING CONSISTS OF SEVERAL TANGENTIAL STRUCTURAL THREADS: THE RAILWAY, THE RIM (SINGEL) AND THE HIGHWAY. THESE DIVIDE THE GREEN RIM AND GENERATE THREE SEPARATE SUB-AREAS, EACH WITH THEIR OWN LANDSCAPE-RELATED FEATURES.
GATE LANDSCAPE
THE EXPECTATIONS OF A CAMPUS MODEL ARE NOT MET. WHAT REMAINS IS AN ARTIFICIALLY DIVIDED LANDSCAPE. HEDGES, FENCES, GATES AND SIGNS CORRECT BOUNDARIES.
THE LACK OF A CLEAR POLICY CREATES A MYRIAD OF SUB-AREAS.
MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO REALISE A QUALITATIVE USE OF SPACE ARE MISSED.
LEGOLAND
THE STRUCTURE OF THE DEVELOPMENTS ALONGSIDE THE RING IS GENERALLY CLEAR. REPEATED APPLICATION OF THE SAME SCALE LEADS TO A TIRED UNIFIED OVERALL IMAGE, THE BUILDINGS NO LONGER STAND IN RELATION TO THE TERRAIN.
LABYRINTH
A MAZE OF STREETS WITH WORKERS’ HOUSES, A CLUTTERED DORMITORY TOWN.
INFRASTRUCTURE
THE AREA HAS NO INFRASTRUCTURE BUT IS SERVED BY THE UNDERLYING NETWORK OF LOCAL ROADS. TYPICAL ARE THE NUMEROUS DEAD ENDS AND SHORT CUTS BETWEEN PLOTS. THE ADJACENT BICYCLE PATH IS USED INTENSELY AND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND BEST KNOWN ENTRANCE TO THE PLOT.
