Atelier/OLOD A&C_MA [ARCHITECTURE & CULTURE _MASTER STUDENTS]: Christian Kieckens / Jan Thomaes
Assignment on the basis of the research towards the transmission and translation of a 'conceptual' idea through the request for an architectonic object to become a didactic model of reality
(or: how a model can become the translation, transmission and representation, of the real conceptual buildingness reflection).
Without doubt, one of the most imaginative paintings is 'The Tower of Babel' by Pieter Breughel: the view on the road that as a spiral moves towards the top to end at a point of sublimation proves our thoughts on what would happen in the centre of the building.
The image of staircases connected to spatiality always played an important role through the whole architectural history, as i.e. the Baroque staircases or Treppenhäuser. But the concept of Haus consists in other connotations than what we simply mean as a house.
During this assignment we want to study and search on the ultimate experience of a staircase space. In a cube of ten by ten by ten meter five mental 'living spaces' need to be designed in which identity results by a process of the cube-Gestalt, the assemblage or coincidence of opposites, the form in the form, or the world as an idea. The result is a step-by-step process of interventions and the ongoing demolition and erasing of all superfluous things, final realized in a one material model on scale 1:33.
