The specific archetypal volumetric highlights a significant degree of autonomy within the special urban character of the Brussels Mont des Arts, but anticipates its surroundings on different levels. The specificity of the volume effect was contextually determined by means of visual axes and a nuancing vis-à-vis the various surrounding squares and streets.
The building was systematically constructed from the basilica plan with two aisles and a central nave of greater height, crowned with a tower. This is still evident in the final volume. The right aisle only consists of three layers so as to open the volume to the Place du Musée and after further development the tower is given a counterweight diagonal to its axis. On the one hand, the volume preserves its archetypal autonomy and maintains, on the other hand, as a quality public space, a clear distance from the Magritte Museum, hereby creating a major articulation in the area.
