This research aims to provide the architectural designer with the knowledge and design strategies to tackle specific design issues on performance of large and complex design projects – with atria as case study.

As the increasing demand for performance has become the driver to change in the building industry since the last two decades, the designer requires growing knowledge to tackle issues and integrate innovative solutions in early phases of the design process. Although the design process today is reinforced with consultants and experts, legally the responsibility remains with the architect.

Nevertheless, the role of the architect is beginning to change and under the influence of – for example – Building Information Modelling (BIM) discussion arises on the position and role of the architect within a collaborative structure in complex projects. The work aims to raise awareness of the potential role of the architect in future complex projects.

Therefore, if the architect is able to integrate opportunities and tackle issues early, with respect for the collaboration with other disciplines, he/she can able to preserve the design concept and support the integration of technical measures in detailed phases of design. At the same time more costs are avoided for the client.
Certain analyses can be outsourced or performed by consultants in all phases of design, but others mostly remain the responsibility and task of the architectural designer, especially in early design phases. Here, daylighting and fire safety are selected as the most influential performances of atria.

From literature and exploratory studies the authoritative design issues and characteristics are formulated. From explanatory research general concepts and strategies are developed to assist the architect in integrating performance – of daylighting and fire safety in atria – in early phases of building design.
