Theater is de laatste jaren een mengvorm geworden waarbij disciplines uit de podiumkunsten aangevuld worden met beeldende kunstvormen en multimedia.

De grens tussen dramatische kunst en vrije kunst is niet zo strikt meer : een theatervoorstelling wordt soms een performance en vice versa.   Meer en meer beeldende kunstenaars maken gebruik van de middelen die de theatermaker hanteert en de theatermaker werkt samen met de vrije kunstenaar.

De afdeling theaterkostuumontwerpen wil met zijn academische bachelor een opleiding aanbieden die de studie van het medium ‘theater’ verbindt  met de studie van de hedendaagse kunst. Een uitgebreide theoretische basis zorgt ervoor dat de student een brede visie krijgt op het medium ‘theater’ in al zijn aspecten.

De vakkennis wordt bijgebracht door middel van praktische oefeningen, waarbij tekstanalyse, dramaturgie, semiotiek, karakteranalyse, technisch onderzoek en praktijk centraal staan.  Daarnaast bieden we een uitgebreide tekenopleiding aan : tekenen is nog steeds het belangrijkste communicatiemiddel van de ontwerper.

Onder leiding van een team docenten en gastdocenten - elk met zijn artistieke visie - wordt aan de studenten o.a. door middel van stages, workshops en oefeningen, een breed pakket van tools aangeboden. Zo kunnen de studenten zich in  een driejarige  bachelor en éénjarige master vervolmaken.  De bacheloropleiding is kort maar intensief - de master is helemaal toegespitst op het
theaterwerk op professioneel niveau.

De opleiding is geenszins een scholing tot 'kostuummaker' maar tot theaterkostuumontwerper, wat heel wat meer bagage veronderstelt.  Het is dan ook belangrijk dat kandidaten die de toelatingsproef doen een minimum aan voorkennis hebben, enerzijds een zo ruim mogelijk maatschappelijk inzicht en cultureel interesse, anderzijds enige vaardigheid in het tekenen.

COSTUME DESIGN  

Theatre has become a mix in which different disciplines from the podium arts are complemented with visual art forms and multimedia.
The fine line between dramatic art and liberal art is not as strict anymore as it used to be: theatre sometimes becomes a performance and vice versa. More and more visual artists use the resources that a theatre maker uses and the theatre maker works together with the liberal artist.

The section costume design wants to offer, with its academic bachelor, an education that combines the study of the medium ‘theatre’ with the study of contemporary art. An extensive theoretical base ensures the student to have a broad vision on the medium ‘theatre’ in all its aspects.

The know-how is taught through practical exercises in which text analysis, dramaturgy, semiotics, character analysis, technical research and practice form the core. Further we offer an extensive drawing course: drawing is still the most important way of communication for a designer.

A team of docents and guest docents –each with his/her artistic vision- offers the students an extensive package of tools through internships, workshops and exercises. That way the students are able to perfect themselves in a three-year bachelor and a one-year master. The bachelor is short but intensive –the master is totally focused on theatre work on a professional level.

The courses are nowhere near a course ‘costume maker’, but lead to ‘theatre costume designer’, what contains a lot more baggage. It is therefore imperative that candidates who are applying for the artistic entrance exam, have a minimum of foreknowledge, on the one hand an as broad as possible social insight and cultural interest, on the other hand some skills in drawing.
